I Hate Vinegar

I grew up hating the smell as well as the taste of vinegar. I know this is unusual because a lot of people love vinegar. They use it as a spice to enhance the taste of food, as main or minor ingredient for sauces and salads and as home remedy for some house troubles. Vinegar is used in many recipes and I love to eat, hence, my admission that I could not really avoid eating food with vinegar. Nonetheless, I would certainly say no to a particular food that smells of vinegar which is shouting that this acidic flavouring is present. If it is to be taken alone or if something is obviously vinegar-enhanced, I refuse to eat.

When my wife learned of this “vinegar” thing during the early stages of our marriage, she
couldn’t understand. We fought a lot because there were foods that need to be cooked with
vinegar and for a working wife it was hard for her to cook additional food because it takes a lot of valuable time for a working wife just to prepare the ingredients needed before finally firing up the stove.

How did we resolve this situation? At first it was hard because she found it bizarre that her vinegar-containing sauce should be placed far away from me when we were the only two persons around the table. Yet, as time went by, she became accustomed to the arrangement.

She also learned to substitute other ingredients for vinegar in certain recipes but if this is not possible at all, she makes sure that the amount of vinegar she adds in is very minimal and totally unnoticed. The best substitute for vinegar is apple cider vinegar. Still, I won’t eat this so other non-vinegar substitution my wife uses is lemon or calamansi.

  1. I agree with you 10,000% and I'm glad I'm not the only one. I can't stand vinegar or anything with vinegar (mustard, salad dressing, relish, mayonnaise, etc). Lots of people don't understand & claim "but you can't even taste it" or "I don't smell it", but I definitely can. If my husband eats something with it I make him sit very far away & put his plate in the sink as soon as he's done eating & he has to wash his hands & brush his teeth before coming near me. I know my behavior seems extreme to others, but I can't help it because it repulses me so much. I wonder if we have a particular gene that makes us sensitive to it?

    1. agreed 1M% and I wonder the same thing about the gene or some chemical thing. It has been a life long feeling of disgust and limits what I can eat tremendously. I wonder if we formed a group or something if collectively we could get to the bottom of it.

  2. Guys you can't even imagine how I hate the taste and mainly the SMELL of this... substance. If I'm standing close to something that contains vinegar my appetite falls down in the same way you've washing out your toilet. And that's a nightmare when someone decided to clean some stuff around like door handlers or whatever with vinegar. I'm out, and get in after a week or so!!!

  4. I hate the taste of vinegar. I gag when I have foods with vinegar in them and spit them out. Vinegar is repulsing to me.

  5. I am the same way - vinegar or anything that contains it nauseates me. One good alternative I have found is a product called verjus. It does what vinegar does in recipes without the nastiness. I recommend the Fusion brand, as it is the one I use the most.

  8. Finally found a write-up like this. I hate vinegar ever since I cannot remember. I don't know the reason either, but people around me find it weird. I tell them that I just can't take anything about vinegar. And yeah, I hate it when people leave their used vinegar in the kitchen sink and makes the whole kitchen smell like rotting feet or whatever, I just feel nauseated. I wonder if this is normal, but one thing is sure, we are rare. Oh, and one more thing, my sense of smell is super sensitive that I can smell burning cigarette even from a 100 meter distance, I am not kidding. How about you?

  9. Omigosh I can't believe I found this writeup and comments. It's so amazing to know I'm not alone. Since childhood (and I'm no spring chicken anymore) I haven't been able to stand vinegar or anything made with it, including just about all condiments with the exception of Hellmans' brand of mayonnaise. No ketchup, mustard, barbecue sauce, salad dressing, nope, nada, can't eat it. I don't know what the big deal is anyway with people having to put something sour or acidic on their salad. I just use a little olive oil and salt/pepper. Sometimes I use white gravy, only cold not not, or mixed with some parmesan. But vinegar? No way. I got tired of trying to explain it to people who simply couldn't/wouldn't understand, so now I just tell people I'm allergic and they seem to buy that. At least it keeps them from trying to make me eat it. Oh thank you for this post!!!!

  10. Are there any scientific reason why we have this repulsiveness to vinager?

  11. I hate vinegard so much that I'd prefer eating in a public toilet rather than next to someone who enjoy a salad with this sh$t in it. I can't even say the word "vinegard" without feeling disgusted. I don't know how this happened to me but it has confine my life significantly. I cant eat at a restaurant due to my phobia that my food might contain vinegar.

  13. Same! Same. Same! Also, the same for me with cigarette smoke @ GabArkitekto. My family loves balsamic so much they literally drink it 😖

  14. Lol I am among the barely tolerant of vinegar crowd (exception: great for cleaning grease when it's mixed with baking soda) and I read the OP and the comments with one nagging question, did Junji ever stumble across the notion of learning to cook? That way his busy working wife might have one less extra challenge to deal with around family meals!
